What Counties Are Considered Central Georgia?

Central Georgia is formally defined by the Community Foundation of Central Georgia as encompassing 21 counties.

That’s right—this region, often called Middle Georgia or the Heart of Georgia, centers on Macon. The largest city here is Macon-Bibb County, which had an estimated population of 153,200 in 2026, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Central Georgia sits in a key spot in the state, about 85 miles south of Atlanta.

It’s just past the northern edge of Atlanta’s metro sprawl, making it a distinct cultural and economic hub for central Georgia. The landscape rolls from gentle hills into flat coastal plain, and the Ocmulgee River cuts right through the middle. Because of its central location, it’s long been a major transportation and agricultural crossroads, which explains that “Heart of Georgia” nickname.

The 21 counties served by the Community Foundation of Central Georgia are listed below.

Macon, located in Bibb County, is the primary urban anchor. Here’s the full lineup:

The city of Macon, the region’s undisputed heart, has a unique governmental structure.

Back on January 1, 2014, Macon merged with Bibb County to become Macon-Bibb County. It was a big deal for modern Georgia, aimed at making local government run more smoothly. The city itself is named after Nathaniel Macon, a North Carolina statesman and early 19th-century U.S. Senator. The region’s identity is also shaped by geography—it sits on the “Fall Line,” where the Piedmont plateau drops into the Coastal Plain. That line shaped early settlement and industry, especially milling.

Central Georgia is easily accessible via Interstate 75 and Interstate 16.

Interstate 75 runs north-south right through Macon, while Interstate 16 heads east to Savannah on the coast. The main airport is Middle Georgia Regional Airport (MCN) in Macon. If you visit in 2026, you’ll find a region steeped in music history—home to the Allman Brothers Band and Otis Redding—and rich Native American heritage at Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park. Every spring, the cherry blossom festival draws crowds. And don’t forget the aerospace presence: Robins Air Force Base in Houston County powers the local economy around Warner Robins.
